Representatives of the Institute for Physical Planning of Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, members of the working team for the implementation of the EU project CRESCO Adria within the INTERREG IT-HR 2021-2027 programme, participated in the third bilateral meeting for the exchange of knowledge, experiences and good practices in climate change adaptation in the coastal area.
The meeting was held on 19th and 20th May 2026 in the city of Pescara, Italy, as part of the first work package of the project: Integral adaptation in the spatial planning process.
The aim of the project is to improve the capacities for climate change adaptation in coastal areas by developing new approaches to adaptation in spatial planning, developing a curriculum for lifelong learning within the framework of the climate transition and adaptation plans for selected pilot areas.
The Institute is in charge of the coordination and delivery of the results of the first work package, which deals with defining the prerequisites for climate-resilient spatial planning through the development and proposal of new methodological approaches and strategic guidelines for managing pressures and risks in the coastal area caused by climate change.
The meeting presented the experiences of the Abruzzo region in adapting to climate change, the existing European and Croatian legislative framework and management practice, as well as the experiences and analyses carried out within the project by the Croatian and Italian partners. Special emphasis was placed on the topics of floods, landslides, coastal erosion, the assessment of natural cover transformation and the interpretation of research results.
For Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, this project represents an important milestone in understanding climate change adaptation in the context of spatial planning and spatial resource management as the foundations of adaptation.
The implementation of the project began on 1st April 2024 and will last until 30th September 2026. The project brings together seven project partners from Croatia and Italy, and more information about the project is available at the link: https://www.italy-croatia.eu/web/crescoadria.
